military time is a system of telling time that is mostly used in the military, public transport, hospitals, and other emergency services. In this system, the hours are numbered from 00 to 23 instead of 1 to 12 as we are used to and minutes are always expressed using two digits - 00, 15, 30 and 45.
Military time expresses 5:00 PM (1700 hours) as 1700. It is based on the 24-hour clock which starts at midnight - 12 a.m., meaning 0000 in military time. Midday or noon starts at 1200 hrs and ends at 1259 hrs and then the afternoon begins at 1300 hrs. The evening or night starts at 1800 hrs which is 6 p.m. in regular time (1800 hours = 6 p.m.).
To convert 5:00 PM into military time, you just have to add 12 hours to it which will give you 1700 hours (5 +12 = 17). When converting from civilian to military time then all you need to do is add 12 hours - so if it's 4:00 PM civilian time it would be 1600 hours in military time (4+12 = 16). Alternatively, if you want to convert from military back into civilian, just subtract 12 and the answer should be 5 PM (17-12 = 5).
